Dear Members of the SOU Community,
As we sit squarely in the midst of the spring term, I want to remind you what has been accomplished to date and update you on the steps that remain in the presidential search process.
As you may recall, we began our preparations for the search last December when the Board of Trustees circulated an online survey to gather feedback from the campus on qualities we should seek in the next president. In January, the board held a presidential search retreat where we reviewed this feedback with our search firm. Shortly thereafter, an SOU Presidential Search Committee was appointed by the board.
Early in February, the committee held a series of listening sessions to gather feedback from members of the SOU community about the appeal and challenges of the position, the priorities for the next president, as well as the attributes and qualifications most highly desired in the next president. Based on this information, the committee developed a position profile to serve as the foundation for the search, which the board finalized and approved. This marked the transition from our preparation phase into the current recruitment phase.
Although the current phase of the search remains confidential, I am pleased to inform you that SOU’s profile is attracting a group of candidates with varied backgrounds, credentials and experiences, creating a robust pool of applicants.
Later this spring, we will move into the evaluation phase of the search process. The Presidential Search Committee will review applicants, narrow the candidate pool, and interview semi-finalists. The committee will then present an unranked list of finalists to the board chair for consideration. Following this, we will invite finalists to visit our campuses, their people, and our community; these visits will mark the “open search” part of the process. The SOU Board of Trustees also will meet with and host the candidates and will conduct any follow-up interviews that may be necessary. The board will then select the next President of Southern Oregon University.
Before that happens, there will be another tremendous opportunity for you to get involved, and we hope that you will. When the finalists come to campus, please come out and meet them; please attend their presentations; and please provide your feedback. On behalf of the search committee and the board, we are grateful to members of campus and the broader community for your involvement in the process. We also appreciate the efforts many of you have made to give us your feedback and bring highly qualified candidates to our attention. This is an exciting time in the history of SOU and I appreciate your interest in this important process. I will continue to update the SOU community as we move forward.
Chair, Presidential Search Committee
